The Face Forward
Manifesto
Every day, millions of us park our cars without giving much thought to how we do it.
Face Forward asks a simple question: given a choice, what is the best way to park?
We believe we have the answer to that question. Whenever practical, drive forward into the space and park face forward.
This is not about creating rules or winning arguments. It is an invitation to reconsider an ordinary habit and ask whether a small change can make parking simpler, quicker, and more pleasant for everyone.
Our position is simple:
Whenever practical, parking face forward is the better everyday default.
Our goal is to explain why we hold that position, present the evidence and reasoning behind it, and let people draw their own conclusions. We advocate for face-forward parking, but we have no interest in shaming or ridiculing anyone who parks differently.
What the data says
For many everyday parking situations, driving directly into a parking space is the simpler maneuver. Reversing into a confined space demands precision and often requires corrections. Reversing out takes place in the wider aisle, where there is generally more room to complete the maneuver.
We tested the overall time difference using 548 complete parking and unparking events from 30 recordings in UC Berkeley’s Dragon Lake Parking Dataset.
Forward entry averaged 15.6 seconds, compared with 36.8 seconds for reverse entry. The advantage changed at departure: vehicles parked nose-in took 20.6 seconds to reverse out, while vehicles parked nose-out took 9.4 seconds to drive away.
Forward-entry drivers saved 21.2 seconds while entering and gave back 11.2 seconds while leaving, producing a 10.0-second end-to-end advantage.
Ten seconds is not a revolution. It is simply an observed advantage in an ordinary task, one that is repeated in parking lots every day.

Why we believe it helps
1. A simpler arrival
In most ordinary parking spaces, driving forward is direct and familiar. The driver sees the space, turns into it, stops, and gets out.
Reverse entry asks the driver to position the vehicle in the aisle, change direction, judge the rear corners, and guide the vehicle into a confined space. Some drivers do this quickly and skillfully. Others need more time or make one or more corrections. Often, reversing into a parking space can delay the flow of traffic and inconvenience other drivers.
Reverse-entry drivers recovered some of that time by driving forward out of the space, but not enough to overcome the additional time spent backing in.
2. Courtesy in a shared aisle
A parking lot is a shared public space. Other drivers are watching brake lights, turn signals, vehicle movement, and hesitation to decipher what happens next.
Parking face forward makes the arrival relatively easy to read: signal, turn into the space, and clear the aisle. It is a small courtesy to the people waiting behind you.
There can also be a practical benefit once everyone has parked. When two neighboring vehicles face the same direction, their driver doors generally open into opposite gaps. When neighboring vehicles face opposite directions, both driver doors can open into the same gap.
This will not matter in every vehicle or parking layout, but in common side-by-side spaces, matching orientation can reduce the chance of two drivers competing for the same narrow opening.
3. Familiar spaces and modern vehicles
Much of our parking infrastructure already accommodates forward entry naturally. Angled spaces explicitly guide drivers into the space from the front, while many conventional perpendicular spaces make forward entry the most direct approach.
Modern vehicles are also better equipped for reversing than they once were. Since May 1, 2018, federal standards have required rear-visibility technology on newly manufactured light vehicles.
Backup cameras do not replace mirrors, careful observation, or awareness of pedestrians. They do, however, make reversing into an open aisle more visible than it was for earlier generations of drivers.
This does not prove that every vehicle or parking space was designed exclusively for face-forward parking. It simply means that the practical case for backing into a confined space in order to avoid reversing later is less decisive than it once was.
Where it does not apply
Always follow posted signs and local rules. Use pull-through spaces when they are available. Choose the maneuver that best suits the space, traffic, and circumstances. The point is not uniformity at any cost. It is to make the ordinary parking decision simpler.
We do not expect everyone to agree with us. We invite people to think about something most of us have never questioned.
Try parking face forward when the setting allows it. Notice whether the arrival feels simpler, whether your intent is easier for others to read, and whether you spend less time completing the maneuver.
Parking is a small thing. That is part of the point.
